History of Abbottabad: From a British Hill Station (1853) to Today’s Top Place to Buy Property

Abbottabad was founded in January 1853 by Major James Abbott, the first British Deputy Commissioner of Hazara, and the city is named after him (“Abbott’s town”). More than 170 years later, its cool climate, clean air, schools and the Pakistan Military Academy make it one of the safest places in Pakistan to buy a plot. Abbottabad Property is a local team based in Township Nawanshehr. We help families in Pakistan and overseas buy verified plots here.

Quick Answer: Abbottabad was set up in 1853 by Major James Abbott as a British hill station and army base in Hazara. It sits about 1,256 metres high, around 61 km north-east of Rawalpindi, and is the gateway to the Kaghan Valley. Today it is the main city of Hazara Division.

Key Takeaways

  • Founded in 1853 by Major James Abbott and named after him.
  • Built as a British hill station and army base, so it was planned with wide roads, parks and churches.
  • Home of the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul since independence in 1947.
  • Cool climate, good schools and security keep land demand steady.

How Abbottabad Began (1849–1853)

After the British took Punjab in 1849, they ran the Hazara region from Haripur. Major James Abbott was its first Deputy Commissioner. He wanted a cooler, healthier base on higher ground. In January 1853 he chose a green plateau in the Orash (Rash) Plain, between the Sarban and Shimla hills. The new town became the headquarters of the district.

Abbott loved the place. When he left for Britain, he wrote a poem called “Abbottabad” about how sad he was to leave its beauty behind. In those years, Hazara and much of today’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were part of British India’s Punjab Province.

The British Hill Station Years

Abbottabad soon became an important army base. Old travel guides called it a “pretty hill station”. The British built cantonment roads, parks, St Luke’s Church and the old Christian cemetery. Many of these colonial buildings still stand today. You can read a detailed research paper on this in British Colonial Era Architectural History of Abbottabad (GPR Journal).

This planning is one reason Abbottabad still feels neat and organised compared with many other cities. Areas near the cantonment and the main roads have always been in demand.

After 1947: PMA Kakul, Schools and Growth

After Pakistan’s independence in 1947, the Pakistan Military Academy was set up at Kakul, about 8 km north-east of the city. It trains the officers of the Pakistan Army. Famous schools and colleges followed, along with Ayub Medical College and a forest research centre.

Today Abbottabad is the capital of Hazara Division. It is linked by road to Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the Karakoram Highway, with the railhead at Havelian about 16 km south. Every summer, tourists come for its weather and for nearby places like Thandiani, Nathia Gali and the Kaghan Valley.
